I wish I liked this movie.

There are so many things going for Captain America. In general, the whole “Avengers” franchise seems to be working out really well. The movies, while not terribly deep, have been pretty ground breaking in terms of visual effects and box office gross. It has been nice to go to these movies. They don’t challenge the mind but they have kept me interested and have been completely enjoyable movies. Captain America was not.

Well…before I get the angry emails (I haven’t gotten one angry email ever about my blog but feel free to send them in greg@thedoubleg.com) I actually did like the story-line of the film for the most part. I think that they took a 3-4 hour film and condensed it well in to a 2 hour long epic. I will say that the Visuals of the film were pretty stunning (not to mention how stunning Chris Evans is). I take issue with how poorly they handled the digital merging of Chris Evans’ head on the scrawny body. It was awkward in the best of times and looks like a giant lollipop at the worst of times.

The pacing of the film was fine and the cinematography was great. In all, I can’t say any bad things about director Joe Johnston (I loved Jumanji!) except for the fact he let composer Alan Silvestri mangle the music. I get it, we are all trying to be patriotic. From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of I don’t give a damn.

The horn section of the orchestra deserves a million dollars. They were basically on non-stop throughout the film. I try not to let one thing dictate how I experience a movie but it was just annoying. I couldn’t concentrate. I couldn’t barely hear. It is tradition to use a lot of brass for big battle scenes and super dramatic parts but because this is Captain America it was big brass everywhere, so they had to redouble their efforts during the big dramatic moments making for a cacophony of tuba.

If they go back in and re-score this film for DVD release then I will be happy to give the move a 6 or 7 flags out of 10 but otherwise I’m just not interested.
